My journey as a photographer began in 1972. Watching my first print materialize under the safe light of the darkroom hooked me for life. That fascination continues for me. From the camera to the printed page, there is magic
in the process.
This passion has led me through several manifestations as a photographer. Each specialty has built upon the lessons learned from previous pursuits. The image, as seen and captured through the lens, is still the fundamental challenge in photography. As always, the composition has almost nothing to do with the type of camera used to capture it. Whether the image is captured on the silver grains of an emulsion or on the pixel site of a sensor, the photographer has to fully understand and control the light that activates that grain or pixel site. The goal is, as always , to record as much information on that grain/pixel as the equipment will allow, and to pre-visualize the final print when exceeding the limits of the film or sensor.
The explosion of the digital world has progressed to a point where image quality, as expressed in resolution, tone, color, and print quality, is equal to and, in many cases, ahead of the old world of film, paper and chemicals. Though the single digital exposure is locked to the same decisive moment of the shutter click, separate exposures can be combined into one final image to expand the range of tonality and color far beyond the physical limits of film. Additionally, the limited options of the print darkroom have little resemblance to the almost infinite possibilities found in PhotoShop®
